Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Cream Cheese Frosting
Ingredients:
- 8 ounces of cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, food coloring, and vanilla extract. Add this to the butter mixture and mix well.
- In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
- Bake the cakes for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes clean. Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
